Default Build thread: scratch Estes K-58 Demon

My herculean (and now metal) right knee is nearly healed, so before I go back on the road the week of 7-8, I'll scratch build a great old one from the early days of "D" power: the Estes K-58 Demon.

Now that I have the decals from CRM the parts pick is complete and all of these parts are made in USA. Tubes, rings, and 18" parachute are vintage Estes. BNC, block, engine hook, and LL are from Erockets. The fins (that I've already cut and shaped) are made from a vintage sheet of bone-dry, dead-flat, tight-grained, 1/8" basswood from Midwest.

The CMR decals are silk screened (I believe) and are super premium! The only (slight) disappointment is that the reproduction decals do not have the foil wraps like the original model did. Anything that was originally printed on foil is medium gray.

Here goes........

I've inserted the BNC into a scrap piece of BT-55 and enrobed it with diluted Elmer's wood filler. The balsa block won't quite fit into the 4" payload tube or into the main BT-55 so I've laid the Corian slab covered with 220 grit across my herculean thighs and then rotary-scraped the block until it just fits into both the payload tube and the main BT.

Well, I guess it's not much of a build thread because the model is basically a 4FNC with a payload section.

The model is ready for painting now, and as soon as the humidity burns off I'll shoot the first coat of primer.
It's like a sauna outside! I asked "The Vixen" if she would beat me with a cedar bough while I wore only a towel, but since she's Italian she had no idea what I was talking about, and she gave me that "get away from me, you big perv" look.

Jeff,

Very nice!

That's one of Estes's best looking models. One built here, spare kit and parts
for a third...

Thanks!

The model has now been shot with gray primer, white primer, gloss white, and gloss yellow. The white portion is fine, but there's some blushing on the yellow so I'll shoot the yellow again.

Your yellow is "off shade" a bit.
Cub Yellow (regular Testors) is the catalog shade.

Hmm, I see what you mean. If it were a scale build I would re-shoot it but since it?s not, I?ll let the Sun yellow remain.
