Yup, ALWAYS make mine with beans. Not without consequences. 'Course, I'm a Canuck, so you need to factor that in..........

It also depends on what you're doing with the chili. If you're just going to eat the chili as a stand-alone dish, beans are quite suitable. OTOH, if you're going to use it as a topping (e.g. on a baked potato, Frito's, French Fries, etc.), then beanless makes sense. FWIW, I always add beans when I make my own... |

When we make it at home we use light red kidney beans.

I'll see your Cincinnati chili and raise you Original Tommy's chili.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_Tommy%27s Though I grew up in Texas and still live here, I will eat chili with beans in it. But I buy it without when possible. Bill

My Grandpa Smith (yes, the same one I played the rifle cleaning prank on) hunted, killed, dressed, and cooked tons of wild game. He could and would make a pot of chili from almost any kind of protein. His best chili was made from elk. His worse was made from bear meat. He?s the only one that would eat the bear meat chili.
It was greasy. It was stinky. The dogs wouldn?t eat it. I doubt that even a raccoon would eat it.
