Default The Mach Buster

Here's a scratch built Hot Rod Rocket made to break the speed of sound.

Main Body is BT-52H, Fin Can is BT/C-55, Nose Cone is custom turned from pine and the Rear Fins are plywood.

Power is via a G80T-10 AeroTech composite motor.

The ejection is from the rear.
The spool is made from a 3/8" dia. solid wooden dowel that is attached to the Nose Cone via a Kevlar Shock Cord. The motor has a lanyard epoxied to the hex on the ejection end of the rocket, which is also attached to the spool. At ejection the force pushes the motor out of the rocket, and the lanyard pulls the spool from the rocket.

John,

Very nice.

I'm curious what the simulation states for velocity if you remove the launch lug. Using a simple tower without the launch lug should reduce drag enough to add some speed.

I'm also curious why you chose a rear ejection system?

Too bad the Aerotech G300 motor is not still around! Talk about acceleration!! Incredible!! I recall seeing a LOC Mini Mag flown with one in the late 80s. That is a 5?+ diameter rocket and at ignition it was just gone; I mean GONE from the pad in a tiny, tiny millisecond! THAT motor would boost an anvil to Mach speeds!!

Oh, Initiator, I just read your G300 history on that other forum. Fascinating!

Earl

Thanks Steve,

Removing the lug entirely gains the rocket 18 mph on a G80, about a 2% increase.

Why rear eject? A couple reasons...
1st, Simple ejection. No need to push the nose cone off, worry about zippering and if the charge is adequate to evacuate the nose cone and chute from the body.

2nd, Construction of the rocket is easier. Just glue the nose cone to the body and keep building.

3rd, The rocket keeps moving in it's natural direction, the ejection charge keeps it going that direction. The motor ejects out the back, and so does the laundry.

Rear eject allows one to fill in the nose cone/body tube seam for lower drag too, which makes the power to reach Mach 1+ lower also.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, AGITATION, CHAOS, TURMOIL, FIASCOS, AGGRAVATION, INSTIGATION, NUISANCE-ACTION, and HAVOC !
